Activation and Manifestation of Ego States

Activation and Manifestation of Ego States
The activation and manifestation of ego states are explained by Eric Berne in his book Transactional Analysis in Psychotherapy (Pages 239 and 242). He does this on the basis of phenomena, organisers and determinants
Organisers: The psychic organs - extero-psyche, neo-psyche and archeo-psyche are organisersThe organisers perform two functions - one to organise determinants into effective influences and the other is to organise the phenomena. The determinants organise programming that influence both organisers and phenomena
Archeo-psyche is the organiser of indigenous biological forces; Indigenous biological forces cause internal programming.
Neo-psyche is the organiser of data processing and experience based probability programming.Autonomous data processing based on past experiences cause probability programming.
Extero-psyche is the organiser of incorporated external canons - body of rules and principles. Incorporated external canons cause external programming.
Determinants: Determinants establish programming. They influence the organisers and thereby the phenomena.
Phenomena: The three ego states extero-psychic (Parent), neo-psychic (Adult) and archeo-psychic (Child) are phenomena
How is it that activation of all ego states happen simultaneously. Eighteen combinations are possible. Each of the three ego states can and do influence the manner in which the activation of the other two ego states happen.

The ethical Adult "Ethos" is a Parent programmed Adult. The feeling Adult "Pathos" is a Child programmed Adult. The third Adult "Logos" remains unexplained in the book. It is that part of the Adult that does reality assessment, estimation and reality testing free of influence of either Parent or Child.

  1. Learnt a lot from today's post. Conclusion I draw is that one cannot be free of any ego state. An autonomous individual is one who is informed by parent and child ego state and makes choices independent of them.
Also from this I understand that if many times my probaility assumptions fail, it's time to celebrate as adult gets trained in ongoing creating new ways
